Shin Eun-Young

Abstract
Objective: The Purpose of this study was to examine the association between short and long sleep duration and health status, physical activity level and HR-QOL(Health Related Quality of Life) among the elderly.

Methods: Cross-sectional data from the 1199 individuals aged over 65 years from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES) 2013 were used.

Results: The mean of sleep duration of the elderly was 6.45. Sleep duration was related to sex, age, family income, self-rated health(SRH). Short sleep duration was related to female, low family income and SRH. Long sleep duration was positively associated with age. HR-QOL score was the highest among those who slept 6-8 hours.

Conclusion: In this population based study, short and long sleep duration of the elderly was associated with several sociodemographic factors, SRH and HR-QOL. Although the design of this study was cross-sectional, but it provides important information about appropriate sleep duration and its associative factors for the elderly.
